    Scholarship to Attend Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine. The UW Arts Faculty raised funds that established a dedicated Fund at Haystack which provides one scholarship for a UW student to attend a two week workshop at Haystack School each summer. Typical courses include ceramics, wood, glass, fibers, metal, drawing, paper, printmaking, artist's books and mixed media. The Scholarship pays for tuition, room and board for a 2-week workshop. You are responsible only for getting yourself there and back. In order to apply for the Haystack scholarship you will need to submit the following to Teri Van Genderen in an envelope marked Haystack: 1) 8 JPEGs of your work on a CD/DVD (labeled with your name, medium used, dimensions.) 2) A separate image information sheet with the same information 3) First and second choice of workshop 4) A cover letter that explains your choices of workshop and why the workshops fit your specific creative directions 5) Resume The deadline for the materials is Monday March 10th 4pm to the Art Office Front Desk.

NEW JUDGING: We have expanded our panel of judges. Each judge will act independently and winners will be chosen from merged lists of all judges.

ENTRY BONUS: All portfolios entered will be included in the galleries on our redesigned web site. Each of your photos will have a direct link to your web site. Currently we have more than 30,000 photos from past contests in our searchable galleries with increasing traffic counts. This extra exposure makes the entry fees a good investment for your future.

A portfolio unit consists of no less than 8 and no more than 12 images. The images may represent the high point of a long career, a specific subject, or a special thematic treatment. More than one portfolio unit may be entered (additional fee required). Many of the 700 photographers spotlighted in Black & White so far have experienced welcome jolts to their sales as a result of the exposure. Although we have photo contests for the broad categories of single images and portfolios, readers have suggested contests limited to the method of exposure or the time period when a photo was captured. We have come up with a blend of old and new which offer an opportunity to a variety of photographic interests.

The narrow focus of each contest means fewer entries and increases the chance your image will be selected. While the winners won’t be featured in a Special Issue, they will get prominent representation in regular issues of Black & White. Adding more pages to each issue will allow us to dedicate 16-24 pages to display winning photos. Each of the four contests will have a dedicated section in one of the four regular issues of Black & White. The added pages of award-winning photography will be an added bonus for our readers.

Vintage Images: Since the advent of digital, there has grown an ever-greater interest in and appreciation of fine art photographs made back in the analog-only era. To honor that work, and to help ensure that it doesn’t fade into obscurity, we’ve created this contest for photographs made prior to 1980. Do you have an archive of vintage images waiting to be discovered? Here’s your opportunity to get some valuable exposure for your classic decisive moments.
Entry Specifications: Open to all genres and film formats (35mm, medium, large). Images are limited to those made in 1980 or earlier.

Smartphone Photography: The smartphone has revolutionized the nature and potential of photographic capture and has opened up expressive possibilities to billions of people the world over. But since quantity does not necessarily equate to quality, we’ve created this contest to help stimulate your smartphone photo creativity. With more megapixels and a growing array of apps, filters and features, today’s smartphone camera is quickly becoming a serious fine art tool. Show us what you can do with your smartphone camera.
Entry Specifications: Open to black-and-white smartphone and tablet images, original monochrome capture or converted from color.

Alternative Printing Processes: Despite having been pioneered decades ago, alternative printing processes — the photogram (ca. early 1800s), daguerreotype (introduced in 1839), tintype (1853), collodion (ca. 1850), Mordançage (ca. 1960s) and others — are still widely practiced. In fact, there are now more daguerreotypists than at any time since the late 1850s. The 21st century has witnessed increased popularity among these and other organic printing methods, as photographers worldwide gravitate to the unique, unpredictable and fascinating print characteristics achievable through these time-honored techniques. Our contest provides the perfect opportunity to show off your darkroom skill and creative vision.
Entry Specifications: Open to all alternative printing processes.

Pinhole/Plastic Camera Imagery: When it comes to analog photography, there’s nothing quite as much fun as going lo-fi with pinhole cameras and plastic cameras like the Holga, Diana and Lomo. The supposed “defects” of these cameras — light leaks, soft focus, vignetting, diffraction — open up a whole new level of creative possibilities for the adventurous photographer. Submit your best pinhole/plastic camera photo and share your vision with the world.
Entry Specifications: Open to black-and-white images made with any type of plastic or pinhole camera.

All levels of photographers are invited to submit work reflecting the theme "Unique: Alternative Processes " to A Smith Gallery.

The deadline is October 9th, 2017.

Any handmade unique prints are eligible with the exception of silver gelatin, C-prints and digital prints. Eligible prints include lumens, cyanotype, Van Dyke, tintype, platinum/palladium, salt, chemigram, bromoil, gum bichromate, photogravure, albumen, ziatype, liquid emulsion, image transfers, kallitypes, lith prints and monrdancage. Unique prints that are made from digital negatives are eligible. The type of camera used for capture is immaterial.

The entry fee is $35 for the first 5 images and $6 for each additional image. In all thirty to thirty five images will be selected for exhibition and shown at the gallery from November 24th, 2017 to January 14th, 2018. Receptions will be held on November 25th and December 16th, 2017 both from 4 to 8pm. A full color Blurb catalogue of the exhibit with all the accepted entries will be available for purchase.

Awards are Juror’s Selection $325, Director’s Selection $250 and $100 for the Visitors’ Award.

The Midwest Center for Photography in Wichita, Kansas seeks entries for a juried photography exhibition, November 24 - December 31, 2017. Juror: Linda Robinson, Gallery Director, MWCP. The Ten X Ten show is an annual small works exhibition with an opening reception in November for Black Friday Sales. The exhibit focuses on offering affordable collectable works that are ten inches by ten inches in dimension, and sell for $100 each. Support the shop small, shop local business model of the gallery and participate in this show. Selected artists will also be featured for sale online. Open to all photographers internationally. We are looking for a wide range of photographs from all photographic genre and subject matter, all photographic media is welcome. Chele Isaac: the understory Opens at MMoCA

September 2–November 12, 2017

MMoCA Opening: Friday, September 22 • 6–9pm

The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition of work by Chele Isaac, a Madison-based artist who creates immersive environments through a combination of multi-channel video projection, sound, and sculpture. At MMoCA, an encompassing cylindrical structure, nearly 30 feet in diameter, serves as the architectural backdrop forIsaac’s seven-channel video, the understory. Projected in the round, Isaac’s non-linear narrative captures surprising connections and overlooked details found within the everyday, all of which comes together as a poetic investigation of our relationship to our changing environment.

The understory opens to the public on Saturday, September 2, and will be on view in MMoCA’s State Street Gallery through Sunday, November 12. In conjunction with the MMoCA Opening for this exhibition, Isaac will discuss her work in the museum’s lecture hall on Friday, September 22 at 6:30 pm.

A juried international photography exhibition
October 26 – November 18, 2017

While photography is popularly associated with capturing the moment, it has always been a sensitive medium of storytelling as well. Looking at a photograph may allow for understanding much about the past that has led up to the moment frozen in time; it may also enable the viewer to imagine the possible future unfolding of events that may evolve from the still record of the here and now. Photographers portraying people, objects, and places can tell us inspiring stories, provided we take the time to study and interpret the images. A narrative told in a single photograph is an exciting challenge for both photographer and viewer alike. Hopefully we appreciate these works with the care and curiosity they deserve.

Encouraged by the success of our previous Stories exhibitions, this year PH21 Gallery invites photographers again to submit their work for our annual group exhibition themed Stories. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who think that their work is telling a story and would like to share it with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; it may be expressed visually on personal or social levels, literally or in abstract, symbolic ways. Zsolt Bátori is a philosopher of art and photographer, living in Budapest. He has taught philosophy of art, photography theory and photography courses at various universities in Hungary, the United States, and Argentina, and has exhibited his photographic work internationally. Zsolt is also the founder and artistic director of PH21 Gallery.

There are two submission options:

A) Standard submission: You may submit 3, 5, 7, 10, or 15 images; these may be all individual works, or they may also include a series of maximum 5 photographs. The entry fee is €15.00 for the first 3 images, €20.00 for 5 images, €25.00 for 7 images, €30.00 for 10 images, and €35.00 for 15 images.

B) Special fee: There is a special rate for maximum 5 images for students and unwaged persons as well as for applicants from low-income economies. The special fee is €8.00. Please do not ask us about your eligibility or send us any proof because we trust your judgement. The special rate is simply for people who – for the reasons indicated above – would not be able to afford the standard fee.

Submission rules and guidelines:

The entry fee is not refundable.
This call for entries is competitive; entrants are not guaranteed inclusion in the exhibition by submitting an entry. Depending on the number and the quality of the entries received, the work of an entrant may or may not be curated into the show. The selection of the juror is final.
Please send in the entry fee first (see the payment option at the bottom of the page), and then submit your images by e-mail to submission@ph21gallery.com, indicating the theme of the exhibition in the subject line.
Images must follow the following format: 8 bit JPEG; Adobe RGB or sRGB; longest dimension maximum 1280 pixels (preferred width for landscape orientation: 1000 pixels; preferred height for portrait orientation: 775 pixels); 72 dpi; maximum 1 MB.
File names: lastname_title or lastname_title_number. File names of maximum 40 characters should only contain letters of the English alphabet and underscores. Titles may be shortened (please avoid very long file names), and they should be given without spaces in the file name. No spaces in the file names, please. In the body of your submission e-mail please include
a) your name;
b) your city and country (with state abbreviation if USA);
c) your website address (if you have one);
d) the exhibition theme;
e) titles of all included photos with the corresponding file names (in case of a series, please number the photos of the series, and indicate the title of the series, if it has one);
f) the actual or desired print size (in centimetres or inches) of each photograph.
All photographers 18 years or older worldwide may enter the competition by submitting their own, original work.
PH21 Gallery welcomes submissions from, and exhibits work of emerging and established photographers as well.
Photographs entered to this call do not have to be editioned. If accepted to the exhibition, it still remains the choice of the photographer to edition the work (e.g.: "ed. 10") or to leave the work uneditioned ("open ed.").
The exhibition copy (if having printed by PH21 Gallery) will be an archival pigment print. However, photographers may also choose to indicate different print types if they offer their accepted work for sale.
Photographs entered to the call do not have to be for sale.
By entering, entrants automatically accept the conditions of the competition; they grant PH21 Gallery nonexclusive right to use and reproduce submitted photographs (with the name of the photographer and the title of the work indicated) for promotional (e.g.: website and Facebook page of the Gallery, catalogue) and exhibition purposes. No royalties or compensation will be paid for these purposes. All copyrights and ownership of the works are retained by the photographer. Entrants assume and accept all legal and financial responsibility for any infringement on the privacy rights or copyright of others, caused by creating or presenting their work in public. PH21 Galley retains the right to exclude from the competition entries that violate the conditions of the competition and ones that violate any human or privacy rights.


When your work is selected for the exhibition:

Entrants selected for the exhibition will be asked to provide a high-resolution TIFF (or JPEG) file for us to have their photograph printed for a standard exhibition copy fee. Exhibition prints are matted (without a frame) on a board for installation, and the fee depends on the size of the print. For instance, for up to 40 centimetres or 15.75 inches (longest dimension) the matted exhibition print fee is €35.00. (Exhibiting photographers may also opt for shipping their own exhibit-ready prints.)

Exhibition prints will be kept on file for a year for future promotion unless the photographer prefers some other arrangement. In case of a sale inquiry the photographer will be promptly contacted. PH21 Gallery commission is 25%. (Submitted photographs, however, do not have to be for sale, and exhibition prints will never be sold; they are for exhibition and promotion purposes only.)

PH21 Gallery archives all photography exhibitions electronically, allowing us to promote our exhibiting photographers to curators, collectors as well as the viewing public. Our website also functions as a virtual gallery site, and all photographs included in our exhibitions are published on the dedicated page of the exhibition.

Join us for a reception FRI, SEP 8 from 6 PM – 8 PM for the Playhouse Gallery Fall 2017 exhibition, Aisthetikos Cuvare (Aesthetic Curves). This exhibition runs from SAT, SEP 2 – SUN, OCT 29, 2017.

Our world is made up of curves, appearing in nature, architecture, and on the body. The artists explore the subtle ways in which curves animate the aesthetics of our daily lives. They capture their findings through an older form of photography hence the Classical title, Aisthetikos Cuvare.

Dane Arts is pleased to announce a call for art for the 2018 season of the Dane Arts First Floor Gallery! There will be four art shows during the year. The quarterly shows will run January through March, April through June, July through September, and October through January.

The purpose of the gallery is to offer Dane county artists a place to show their work in a frequently visited public space, and an opportunity for the public to discover and enjoy the work of local artists.

Artists of original, two-dimensional, ready-to-hang, works of art may apply for consideration to exhibit. Artists must be 18 years of age and reside in Dane County. Artist groups may also apply.

Deadline: Friday, October 20th, 2017. The jury will select art for all four shows from this submission.

Open to all photographers nationwide in the USA. All photographic media is welcome.

We sustain ourselves through its consumption, and frolic in bodies of it. We gaze at the vatness of oceans' expanse. Water is crucial in our world; from the rain nourishing our land, to the water we use everyday in our homes. We celebrate H2o in all it's uses and forms. This exhibition aims to represent varied takes on how this most powerful element is used and appreciated in our lives. All interpretations and styles are welcomed, from the literal to the sublime to the understated.

Selection will be based upon the series of work submitted by each artist rather than solely on individual images. A brief artist statement is optional.

Selected artists will have their work featured in the exhibition and online.

All photographic works should be ready to hang on the wall for the exhibition. MWCP offers printing and framing services, we also offer standard size rental frames.


SHIPPING OF WORK

Exhibiting artists are expected to cover the round trip shipping costs for their work. Please ship the work in reusable packaging along with return shipping for the package, for example: Fed Ex account or card number on a return shipping lavel. All work that does not have return shipping will be donated to the annual MWCP Benefit Auction.


ASSOCIATED FEES AND INFORMATION

There is a 40% gallery commission for work sold. MWCP reserves the right to reproduce images for promotional and publication purposes, if necessary. Any work that differs significantly from the entry, or is sub-standard quality will be disqualified from the exhibit. MWCP cannot be responsible for damage or loss during shipping. Email addresses will be added to our email list. Entry fees are non-refundable, no exceptions. The LensCulture Exposure Awards 2017 aim to discover and showcase the world’s best contemporary photographers — including all genres of photography, and from diverse cultures on every continent. Now in its 8th year, the competition will help photographers of all levels gain global recognition and move forward creatively and professionally. Our international jury will select six top winners as well as eight jurors’ picks, 25 finalists and five student spotlights.

Awards include opportunities for exposure in the Exposure Awards 2017 online exhibition as well as at over 50 international photography festivals, inclusion in the upcoming photobook, The Best of LensCulture Today: 150 Contemporary Photographers, which will be distributed to over 1,000 industry insiders and sold worldwide, and so much more. The New York Center for Photographic Arts (NYC4PA) invites photographers world-wide to submit images using any photographic process (print, image transfer, emulsion transfer, encaustic, black and white, etc.). Winners will receive $3,000 in cash awards, be featured in a New York Gallery Exhibition, on the NYC4PA Online Gallery and in the MACRO 2016 catalog. The Grand Prize winning image will be posted on the NYC4PA home page.

Hello Artists, Educators, & Arts Organizations -
In May 2017, the Oak Park Art League will be presenting a Midwest Juried Exhibition that pays tribute to architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his iconic “Prairie” style, inspired by the natural environment and the American Midwest. The exhibition “Elevating Nature” is being presented in recognition of the architect’s 150th birthday, with exhibit dates coinciding with other Wright events that draw visitors from around the world to Oak Park.

Submission for this exhibition is open to artists from Midwest states including, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Artists are invited to submit 2D and 3D work of any media that references nature and/or the Midwestern landscape. Jurors Brian Ritchard and Brent Fogt will select works that embody the progressive spirit of Wright and the essence of the American Midwest. Over $2,000 in cash prizes for Best of Show and Juror Awards will be presented in two categories:
Most innovative interpretation of the Midwestern landscape
Best use or representation of natural materials or nature elements

Founded in 1921, the Oak Park Art League (OPAL) is one of the longest, continually-running non-profit arts organizations in Illinois. Eligibility


Open to artists around the world 18 years of age or older who submit artwork in any medium except video and wearable art. Submissions must be the creation of the artist.

Images

Artists may choose one of two ways to submit images: (1) upload images using our online form; or (2) send images by email [you may still pay online]. Whatever way is chosen, images should be saved in jpg format and resized. The size of the file should be no more than 1.5 MB and the maximum dimension of the image should be no more (and not much less) than 1000 pixels. Failing to resize images will result in problems with uploading. The file name of your image should follow this convention - last name, title of work (perhaps abbreviated), and number (matching entry form number) [for example, SMITH_SUNNYDAY_3.jpg]. Do not include stray characters such as # or * in the file name. Doing so will prevent the file from uploading properly. Emailed mages should be sent to info@stillpointartgallery.com. Once the submission deadline has passed, no image substitutions may be made.

The Sun is an independent, ad-free magazine that for more than forty years has used words and photographs to evoke the splendor and heartache of being human. Each monthly issue celebrates life, but not in a way that ignores its complexity. The personal essays, short stories, interviews, poetry, and photographs that appear in The Sun’s pages explore the challenges we face and the moments when we rise to meet them.
From its idealistic, unlikely inception in 1974 to its current incarnation as a nonprofit magazine with more than 70,000 subscribers, The Sun has attempted to marry the personal and political; to honor the genuine and the spiritual; to see what kind of roommates beauty and truth can be; and to show that powerful teaching can be found in the lives of ordinary people. Each issue includes a section devoted entirely to writing by readers.
Writing from The Sun has won the Pushcart Prize and been selected for the Best American Short Stories and Best American Essays anthologies.

We’re interested in photographs of many kinds. We’re not looking for photojournalism, just unique perspectives on the world around us. We do not use artwork or illustrations. We ask that you limit an individual submission to 30 photographs for ease of review, but you are welcome to submit as often as you like. Upon publication, we pay from $100 to $200 for one-time use of photographs featured inside the magazine; we pay $500 for those we use on our cover. For photo essays we pay $500 to $1,000. We give contributors four copies of the issue in which their work appears and a complimentary one-year subscription, also upon publication. We use from ten to thirty photographs in each monthly issue. When we accept a photograph, we keep the image on file until we find a place for it in the magazine.
We try to respond within three months. With nearly a thousand photographs submitted a month, however, our backlog is often substantial. Don’t let a longer wait surprise you.

Melanin Speaking is a multicultural student blog dedicated to uplifting the voices and stories of students of color.

We’re excited to announce today that we are accepting submissions for our first issue! We accept a variety of genres: visual art, poetry, fiction, article/editorials, and personal anecdotes. We want all your stories — everything from confessional poetry of lived experiences to queer womxn of color space pirates, to intelligent editorials and comics!

The theme for the first issue is (In)visibility. We are accepting submissions from OCTOBER 20th to NOVEMBER 10th at midnight!

We are accepting submissions for the second annual Art of the Wisconsin BBA Student Art Exhibition!

Currently enrolled UW-Madison students pursuing a BBA degree, a Certificate in Business or Entrepreneurship, or Direct Admits are encouraged to submit your original artwork to be displayed in Grainger Hall.

Business Badgers are multidimensional and talented in ways that may not come through at first glance. Specifically, business education is known for technical skills, almost as if, if they have the right skills, they'll be able to 'get ahead'. But the majority of people who 'get ahead' are the people who have a broad range of skills and talents. Here is your chance to show off this side of you!

Artists are invited to submit a maximum of 3 pieces for consideration, in the following formats:

- Short films
- Music (See Below)
- Any other forms of media will also be considered

It is an inclusive showcase appreciating the unseen creativity and talent of UW-Madison students associated with the Wisconsin School of Business. Select pieces will have the opportunity to be hung in Grainger Hall after the show.

OPEN TO ALL UW MADISON ART STUDENTS:

Dear UW-Madison art students,

For the 11th year, the Provost Office is providing an opportunity for students to display finished art works through the Student Art Showcase in the Offices of the Provost. The Provost Office is joined by the Secretary of the Faculty Office and the Office of Quality Improvement in showcasing finished art works in Bascom Hall.

We are soliciting finished and framed pieces for display during the 2016-2017 academic year. The pieces will be hung on walls in the Room 117 office suite and adjoining offices in Bascom Hall, in the Secretary of the Faculty (SOF) suite, and the Office of Quality Improvement (OQI) offices. This Showcase is open to all levels of students from the UW-Madison Art Department.

Several members of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning’s office group and representatives from SFO and OQI will make final decisions on which art pieces will be displayed. We have substantial wall spaces available (different spaces that are approximately 6'x6', 3’x6’, 6’x3’, 3’x3’, 3’x9’, 2’x2’) and we will select as many pieces as will fit and display attractively within these spaces.

(DEADLINE Monday, October 31, 2016):
·a digital image of your work;
·a description of its dimensions;
·a one-paragraph description of the piece (which can be printed on a 4x6” card that will be displayed along with selected works);
·your degree program (e.g. BA/BS, MFA, certificate in Studio Art) and,
·your contact information (name, campus/local address, e-mail address, and phone number).

As only finished and framed pieces can be displayed, we will be able to offset some of the framing costs on works selected for the exhibition. Stipulations for receiving assistance are:

*Works are currently unframed.
*Works on paper only – paintings or other works on stretchers can hang without frames.

*Framing must be done at the University Book Store.
*Undergraduate students receiving framing assistance must also agree to and take their selected pieces to the Undergraduate Symposium (April 13, 2017), and then return them to the Vice Provost’s Office, or submit a proposal for an Artist’s Talk. (See: https://ugradsymposium.wisc.edu/)
*Amount of contribution toward individual framing costs will depend ultimately on the number of pieces chosen for the exhibit, as well as the size of the piece, but will be about $125 per student.

Emotions & Commotions Across Cultures. As and Associated Partner of the European Month of Photography Berlin, the first edition of the Berlin Foto Biennale - and 4th edition of the Biennial for Fine Art and
Documentary Photography - will take place at the Palazzo Italia (Römischer Hof), situated in Unter den Linden 10, in the historic heart of Berlin. After Madrid, Buenos Aires and Malaga, Berlin was chosen as a new base to promote
emerging talents and established artists from all over the world.
Emotions and Commotions Across Cultures will present 1230 photos by 446 contemporary artists from 41 countries of all continents – among them 65% women, who have received the Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers.

Dane Arts First Floor Gallery

Dane Arts is pleased to announce the Dane Arts First Floor Gallery! The gallery will be located on the first floor of the city-county building. The purpose of the gallery is to offer Dane county artists a place to show their work in a frequently visited public space, and an opportunity for the public to discover and enjoy the work of local artists. The first show will be installed this September and will remain on display until the end of the year.

Artists of original, two-dimensional, ready-to-hang, works of art may apply for consideration to exhibit. Artists must be 18 years of age and reside in Dane County. Artist groups may also apply.

The deadline to apply for the September show is Friday, July 8th. For 2017 exhibitions, the deadline is Friday October 21st, 2016. Starting in 2017, artwork will change four times per year.
